A strong safety culture is central to achieving industry-leading performance in health and safety. This is the commitment that has seen BTE Renewables achieve a “near perfect” rating by industry standards. The company announced that during its 2022 year of operations, only one injury was recorded across all its project sites, with nearly 800 000 hours worked.

A strong safety culture

BTE Renewables has achieved an exceptionally high level of safety across all its operating sites.

“This demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that all employees returned home safely to their families every day, which is our ethos and it’s in our DNA,” said Robert Skjodt, CEO of BTE Renewables.

The renewable energy sector is generally considered to be a relatively safe environment, but workers do face occupational risks, many of which are common to other power generation facilities.

The Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR) is an indicator of the state of health and safety at any workplace and provides an indication of the organisation's efforts to protect the workers from work-related hazards. In the case of BTE Renewables, it records a single medical case that occurred in 2022, over the nearly 800 000 hours worked, across six power plants in South Africa and Kenya. This is considered very low, by local and international standards.

It is one of the best health and safety milestones the company has achieved since each of its projects entered commercial operations and it exceeds BTE Renewables’ own target.

“We made substantial changes and financial commitments to modernise our approach, which included moving to a working basis of ‘I am my brother’s keeper’ across all our sites – rather than a ‘policing by management’ approach,” said Leticia Vos, Senior Health and Safety Manager at BTE Renewables.

She added, “We have adopted a proactive approach to mitigating risk and continually improving our health and safety performance. We don’t allow non-conformance on our health and safety procedures, policies or any legislative requirements and we are committed to continually improving our systems of operation, keeping our TRIFR as low as possible during our operations. In this way, we can nurture our ‘Brother’s Keeper’ culture where we care for each other.”
