Sparks Electrical News July 2020In the July issue of Sparks Electrical News, Managing Director of Regent Lighting Solutions, Randal Wahl, discusses why a healthy local lighting manufacturing sector is crucial for South Africa. “Lighting plays a significant role in employment, and it is important that we do not compete with high volume, medium quantity production, but focus rather on medium output, high quality fixtures. Africa cannot compete with the mass production of Eastern Europe and Asia, but we can compete in terms of understanding the conditions in which we operate and in developing products to meet these requirements,” he says. Read our July cover story to see what else Wahl has to say on the subject.

Elsewhere in the issue we look at Cables and Cable Accessories, Standby and Emergency Power as well as Lighting.

IESSA takes courses online

To ensure precautionary, proactive measures to minimise the risk of spreading the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) IESSA has announced that it will be taking its courses online, via the Zoom Webinar based platform. The first course to be presented online is Module 2: Interior Lighting, scheduled for the 14th and 15th July.

Why local lighting manufacturing is critical

To ensure we are not totally dependent on external resources, it is critical that the lighting industry retains its IP and knowledge within the African continent so we do not need to rely on overseas companies to inform us. Investing in local lighting manufacture, developing skills and providing quality solutions for our unique conditions could help to reverse this trend.
