In 2015, Milan is to host Expo 2015, the Universal Exposition. The
city is reinventing itself during the course of this and next year in
preparation for the event. A breath-taking skyline, new cycle paths,
subways tunnels, and an efficient lighting system are just some
examples of a stunning urban renovation without parallel in Europe.
The driving force behind these urban developments is energy
efficiency and sustainability. The city is not only conforming to the
latest building standards but is echoing the main theme of the
Expo: Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.
The new lighting system represents a major part of this project
and, via a tender by A2A the service utility company that manages
Milan’s electrical supply, some 84 000 LED luminaires will be
installed by February 2015.
AEC is going to light up Milan using the Italo LED street lantern
designed, engineered and manufactured by AEC in its state of the
art facilities in Arezzo, Tuscany.
The Italo provides high quality lighting performance, excellent
colour rendering and optimum energy efficiency and the family
consists of Italo 1, 2 and 3 – the same design in three different
sizes – and Italo 2 Urban (in post top and suspended versions). The
optical systems and a wide range of optics enable the products
to be installed in most urban applications, for instance, residential
areas, parks, squares and city centres.
AEC is founded on the themes of:Technology, Quality, Research
and Passion. These factors drive its product development, which
is focused on constant technological up-grades, robust research
attention to detail, aesthetic design and quality.

AEC to light up Milan
South Africa’s top electro-mechanical engineering
group ACTOMhas acquired Genlux Lighting, leading
designer and manufacturer of outdoor and industrial
luminaires.
Genlux, which specialises in outdoor luminaires
for floodlighting, roadways and commercial proper-
ties and luminaires for industrial applications, will
form part of ACTOMElectrical Products, the ACTOM
group’s distribution arm, which operates a network
of branches around South Africa and in Namibia.
“Genlux is a strong player in the local market
and is widely recognised for the high quality of its
products and its depth of expertise in this field,”
says Neil van Blerk, ACTOM Electrical Products’
Business Development Executive.
The acquisition, which took effect on April 1,
strengthens ACTOM Electrical Products’ already
well-established presence in the local lighting mar-
ket, particularly with municipalities and large com-
mercial and industrial users of luminaires. It takes
ACTOM a step further to providing a full turnkey
service encompassing design, manufacture and
installation of luminaire systems in large projects, in-
cluding sports stadiums, residential developments,
shopping complexes and the like.”
Germiston-based Genlux Lighting, formed in
1991 by John Taverndale, originates from a facility
first established by ACTOM’s predecessor GEC-
Alsthom, which manufactured and marketed street,
industrial and flood lights.
Genlux has a technological partnership with a
leading international designer and manufacturer
of luminaires and operates its own network of
branches in Germiston, Durban, Cape Town and
Port Elizabeth.
“It is our intention to maintain these branches in
their present form as dedicated outlets for Genlux
to complement ACTOM Electrical Products’ 14
branches,” says van Blerk.
