Feeling flushed

“Whether decorative or strictly
utilitarian, flush-mount ceiling
light fixtures are ideal sources of
ambient light, especially in rooms
with comparatively low ceilings or
where space is at a premium,” says
Melissa Davidson from The Light-
ing Warehouse. She adds, “And,
whether you desire a statement
piece or something sleek and un-
obtrusive,The LightingWarehouse
offers a variety of contemporary,
transitional and traditional ceiling
lighting fixtures that can bring
light and great design aesthetics to any low-ceiling
interior space.”
Low ceilings do not necessarily mean that you
cannot have fun with lighting. “When it comes to
them,” says Melissa, “many people believe that
downlighters are the only viable option. However,
this is not the case – flush-mounted and semi-flush-
mounted lights are another great alternative that
can add an elegant element to your lighting design.
They offer a host of benefits, including the fact that
their space-saving designs are an option for lower
ceilings; they come in a variety of styles that suit
traditional and contemporary schemes; and since
they often host more than one lamp on each fitting,
money can be saved by installing a single light point,
instead of a number of downlighter points for the
same illumination.”
A flush-mounted ceiling light is, as its name im-
plies, mounted so that the fitting lies flush with the
ceiling. Flush-mounts boast excellent space-saving
qualities. Semi-flush-mounts offer a rod-like addition
so the light is not altogether flush with the ceiling,
but hangs just below.
When buying ceiling lights, it is important to bear
in mind the size of the room in which the light will
be featured: The light chosen should be in propor-
tion to the room’s dimensions – if it is too big, it
will overwhelm the space, if it is too small, it will
look out of place.

The National Arts Festival (NAF) is Africa’s biggest
annual celebration of the arts. It’s hosted in Graha-
mstown, a small university city in the Eastern Cape,
and takes place over eleven days every winter.
This year, from 3 to 13 July, 225 000 people at-
tended some 2 800 performances in 50 venues scat-
tered across Grahamstown and its surrounds and,
once again, Electrosonic SA was a proud sponsor.
In the past Electrosonic SA has supplied lighting
equipment and technical training, but this year, to
celebrate the festival’s 40
th
birthday, it decided to do
something special. Recently the company became
the sole distributor of Green Hippo’s Media Servers,
and the Festival presented the ideal opportunity to
show what these servers could do.
The Monument, located on a hilltop overlooking
Grahamstown, is the headquarters of the Festival. It
is a superbly equipped fa-
cility and a hub of creative
activity, especially during
the NAF. Since its opening
in 1974, it has inspired art-
ists to stretch their imagi-
nations and embrace a
future of hope, which is
exactly what it did for the
intrepid crews of TechRig
and Electrosonic SA.
Techrig is a technical solutions agency and
provider of audio-visual (AV), lighting, sound and
structures. It has a reputation for delivering the
highest level of expertise in a global arena. It is
also the proud owner of the only Barco HDQ-2K40
projectors in Africa. This 3-chip DLP projector boasts
40 000 lumens light output and 2 K resolution. It was
a perfect fit for the Green Hippo, which offers two
full HD outputs in pan mode. Only the best equip-
ment would do for the task of throwing an image
from 100 m away onto the town-facing wall of The
Monument, which is 80 m across and 20 m high.
The content of the light show, which ran from 6
to 11 pm every night, was programmed onto the
Green Hippo HD server using theTimeline product
feature. The projection was visible throughout the
whole of Grahamstown, showcasing the immense
power of the projectors, and the fidelity of the
Green Hippo server. The show fast became a talking
point, and contributed to general festivities.
“The NAF is incredibly grateful to TechRig and
Electrosonic SA for making the project happen. It’s
a great privilege to work with such talented profes-
sionals on this quite extraordinary Festival,” says
NAF Technical Director Nicci Spalding.
