LED lighting solutions for Sun City
Sun International’s renowned Sun City Resort consists of four hotels
and a casino, and borders the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve. Owing
to the size of the resort, energy saving solutions are a prime focus
and the resort’s street lighting was reviewed with this in mind. The
luminaire of choice was the BEKA CITEA LED 36 LED/60 W and, to
date, approximately 100 LED luminaires have been installed.
Sun City required an LED solution to replace conventional HID
street lighting on the resort.The client chose LED technology because
of its low maintenance, low energy consumption and high-perfor-
mance, and the BEKA luminaire was chosen for its aesthetic value.
Manufactured in South Africa, the BEKA CITEA LED is designed
for local environmental conditions. It can operate in ambient tem-
peratures of up to 35°C without reducing its useful lifetime of 60 000
hours at a lumen depreciation of not more than 20% (L80).
Prior to the installation, BEKA Schréder supplied the LED street
lighting from the main entrance to the Cabanas hotel and from the
suppliers’ and staff entrance to the circle at the main entrance. This
was achieved with the BEKA LEDlume-midi 36 LED/60 W. To date,
75 BEKA LEDlume-midi luminaires have been supplied with more to
come. It was the superior performance of the BEKA LEDlume-midi
that convinced the client to use the BEKA CITEA LED luminaire.

The independent association, which comprises a
group of local organisations in the electrical sector,

industry in 2012 to address the prevalence of sub-
standard electrical products in South Africa that do
not conform to local regulations. In the absence
of local regulations, members of the association

quality and safety of every product and service. The
SAFEhouse Association strives to protect users of
electrical systems; to expose non-compliance or
other features that affect safety; to enforce its code
