SA-based Condra Crane’s Bulgarian
subsidiary has secured orders from Rus-
sia for a further three overhead cranes,
expanding the footprint created by last
year’s initial installation in that country,
and cementing the successful partner-
ship between Russian agent Vniiptmash
and Condra’s two factories in Pazardjik
and Johannesburg.
The orders follow many years of
careful research into the Russian crane
market, and initial difficulties compet-
ing against other Bulgarian firms for the
supply of standard cranes and hoists.
“To overcome the disadvantage of com-
peting with standard hoists of Bulgarian
manufacture, we decided to focus on
special designs and high-lift hoists,
where Condra has wide experience,
advanced designs and cost containment
skills,” says Stefan Babatchev, director
of Condra Bulgaria. “In South Africa,
Condra is very difficult to beat on price
in these segments, and we decided to
carry this advantage through to the
Russian market.”

A leader in FTSE4Good index
Atlas Copco was again selected as a member of the FTSE4Good index, which
includes world-leading companies that score well on environmental, social and
governance practices, and was named a ‘leader’.
Atlas Copco scored 96 out of 100 in the global FTSE Group’s evaluation of
companies on issues such as: fighting corruption; promoting labour and human
rights; and environmental responsibility. In April, Atlas Copco announced that it
was included in the index, “but the FTSE Group has now let us know that Atlas
Copco has been named a ‘leader’ within the index’s Industrial Goods and Services
segment, which includes only five companies globally.

sidiary has secured orders from Russia for
three overhead cranes valued at around

familiar with the Condra product and
ordered it as part of the contract.
“Our participation in the 2011 crane
expo also helped to impress upon the
market those aspects unique to Con-
dra; for example, the simple gearbox
construction facilitating access for
maintenance, the direct drives, and the
design for short headroom and compact
hoists,” Babatchev adds.
The new orders, valued at some
R20-million, include: one 90/20-ton
and two identical 100/20/5-ton cranes.
Orders have also been received for com-
ponents for two 10-ton and one 15-ton
crane, comprising end-carriages and
