MM November 2017 Front coverWhile there may be a limited number of African mining projects in the execution phase at the moment, studies on upcoming projects are coming through thick and fast and we cover some of them in this issue.

Bannerman Etango uranium projectAn Optimisation Study on Bannerman’s Etango uranium project in Namibia, for example, has delivered a US$73 million saving on the estimated capex while, in neighbouring Botswana, Lucara Diamond Corp has completed a PEA which confirms the viability of an underground mine at its Karowe site once the current open-pit operation reaches the end of its economic life in 2026.

Moving to the DRC, ASX-listed Nzuri has released the results of a Feasibility Study on its Kalongwe project in the DRC, which details a proposed first stage of development costing approximately US$53 million which would have DMS and spiral concentrates as its end product. Kalongwe is located close to the Kamoa and Kakula discoveries of Ivanhoe.

Roxgold Feasibility StudyFinally, and turning to West Africa, Roxgold has produced a positive Feasibility Study on the first proposed expansion at its Yaramoko mine in Burkina Faso. The expansion, which could be in production by the end of next year, involves the establishment of an underground mine at the Bagassi South deposit, located 1,8 km from the existing plant. Yaramoko is one of Burkina Faso’s newest mines – it poured its first gold in May last year – and has proved highly successful since start up.
